Sunday Night Community Tea

The Sunday Night Community Tea is provided each Sunday (except for two Sundays at the end of December) at 5:30pm on the 1st Floor of the UnitingCare Wesley building at 10 Pitt St Adelaide free of any charge to our guests. The guests, in general, are homeless people or people experiencing some financial difficulty.

The wholesome meal comprises a main course of cold meats and three salads and bread and butter. Cake and fruit follow. Tea and coffee is provided. During the winter months the cold meat and salad is replaced with the choice of two soups. Guests are seated at tables with table cloths and the meal begins with a welcome, explanations and prayer of thanks. Approximately 30 people attend during the winter and 50 in the summer with a maximum of 70 on one night this year.

There are 35 people who are rostered to carry out one or more of the 6 defined roles required for each tea. These people come both from within and outside of Maughan church. A minimum of five people plus the caretaker are in attendance every Sunday.

The response from our guests is one of appreciation and thanks. Many will express their appreciation saying thanks or, God Bless You or, that was really good or similar.

The tea is a very happy evening for guests and servers.

Every year a social night is arranged for all weekly and rostered people to get together. This social night is well supported.

The tea is a very important support function in the Adelaide community and in particular for those who are marginalised in the society.
