Sermon 25 January, 2009 “A.C.T.S.S. of Prayer, prompting and action”

Rev Liellie McLaughlin

(description of  A.C.T.S.S. at the end of sermon)

Bible reading: Luke 4: 18-30

Last week we discussed prayer and how the guidelines of a good relationship help us to understand the guidelines for a good prayer life.  And just as we do not expect a marriage to grow out of time ‘ on the fly’ or from incidental conversations – just so a good prayer-life needs good commitment or else it won’t grow.  Today – the sermon will be on HOW we pray; the A.C.T.S.S. of Prayer, prompting and action.

Some of you may have heard about this helpful formula: A.C.T.S.S.  (Adoration; Confession; Thanksgiving and Supplication + Silence) as a way to deepen and balance our prayers.  I would like to discuss that and how I think it fits into the mission Jesus gave to his disciples.   Prayer is one of the ways we hear from God; apart from Scripture and life lessons, and I think prayer is the most important and direct way.  So, if you prayer life sounds like the ‘Please God trap’; where one mumbles on the run: please God give me; please God help me; Please God cover me; Please God arrange this…..may this sermon help you to go a bit wider.  If you have a well-developed prayer-life, my hope is that you will gain something to go deeper, or something you may teach a fellow-disciple.
